 This information has been drawn from census records as well as other sources identified by each document.  Without doubt, the names are incomplete when taken by decade.

Each document is alphabetized by the surname of the free person of color or by the name of the slave holder, if that is the closest we can get to the African Americans held in slavery, whose sex, age, and color can be helpful.  Whatever information the particular census furnishes is noted, although the information changes from one census to another.  Names of women are marked with an asterisk (*).
